Rome Pass and Card
Rome needs little introduction.
A vacation to Rome-the Italian capital that is home to the Vatican State-is a great tourist destination, sooner or later definitely a tourist stop on one of our trips.
When it comes time to visit Rome on vacation, I recommend that you inquire about passes and cards for Rome to use for museums and transportation.
There are different formulas (to suit different types of travel), and very often they save money on museums, tourist attractions and public transportation.
In fact, the historical and cultural heritage guarded by this city with a history spanning thousands of years is truly vast.
Roma Passes and Cards allow us to experience a rich city vacation, using public transportation and with the possibility of access to many of its monuments, museums and attractions, even with priority access to avoid the typical long lines, greatly improving the quality of vacation.
On this page I have tried to collect all the info about passes and cards for Rome, comparing different solutions, providing reviews and advice, so that you can evaluate which one to choose for your vacation (or not to choose, tourist passes do not always fit the visiting itineraries).

Rome Pass and Card Review
Roma Pass, Omnia Card and other passes for Rome are good solutions for your vacation. If you plan to have a classic tourist vacation, visiting museums and monuments in the city, moving around by public transportation, the passes are most likely to be convenient.
Rome Card and Pass allow you to experience the city with greater freedom, and the more things you visit, the greater the discount.
The Roma Pass is worthwhile if you visit the 2 attractions included, plus some other discounted admission. In the table below you can see a quick comparison with the normal admission prices to the attractions and the discount with the Roma Pass. As free attractions I chose the Colosseum and the Galleria Borghese, two tourist must-sees in the city. You also skip the lines, which is another nice perk.
If in addition to the sights of Rome, you also want to visit the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and other priceless wonders of this mini-state, then you might want to choose the Roma Omnia Card. Savings will vary depending on what you visit, although between the two I would recommend the Roma Omnia Card because it is more comprehensive.
Comparison of Roma Pass and Roma Card
In this table I have included a quick comparison to assess the cost-effectiveness between Rome Pass, and Omnia Card Rome.

Roma Pass and Omnia Card are the preferred choices for tourists, with many positive reviews from those who have used them.
In addition to these two choices, there are other solutions that lend themselves to different travel itineraries. Less publicized, but undoubtedly good alternatives for your vacation:
- Rome Tourist Card: a smart and flexible formula with a few attractions included. For everything else you decide to see or do (museums, tours, cruises, excursions), you get a 10% discount.
- The Rome Explorer Pass in my opinion is perfect for those who have already been to the city and would like to participate in some special tours or activities.
Pay attention to the days on which you have planned your trip to Rome. In fact, on Mondays most museums remain closed and you may lose the convenience of the pass.
Also keep in mind that some museums and archaeological sites are free on the first Sunday of every month, including the Colosseum.
Admission is always free in the following museums, even without a pass: Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, Museo Carlo Bilotti in Villa Borghese, Museo della Repubblica Romana e della memoria garibaldina, Museo delle Mura, Museo di Casal de' Pazzi, Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, Museo Napoleonico, Museo Pietro Canonica in Villa Borghese, Villa di Massenzio.

How It Works
The validity of the pass starts from the first use on public transportation or for entry to one of the included attractions. Even if it has already been activated, the pass must always be validated the first time you board public transportation.
For admission to museums and other places of interest, it is sufficient to show your card, but in some cases mandatory reservations are required, such as for the Colosseum (at a cost of €2).
The Roma Pass is contactless and must be filled out on the back with your first and last name. It is not transferable, in fact in cases of control they may ask you to show ID.
Along with the card you will be given a map of Rome and a city guide with all the discounts indicated.
Buy the Roma Pass 48h or 72hBooking museums and attractions with Roma Pass
As noted above, advance reservations are required for some museums and attractions.
In detail, reservations are required for:
- Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine - online booking through Ticketing Colosseum (do this well in advance - maximum one month in advance)
- Borghese Gallery - online booking via romapass.ticketone.it (cost 2€) or free of charge via email by writing to romapass@tosc.it (confirmation within 48 hours - service active from Monday to Friday)
As you can imagine, these are some of the most famous and visited tourist spots in all of Rome, so I recommend that you make reservations several days in advance (at least 2 weeks), otherwise you risk not finding a place or having to make do with the most inconvenient times.
Reservations when mandatory should also be made for children or those who get in for free.
Keep in mind that you do not need to have already purchased the Roma Pass to book, you can still do so and buy the pass later.
For other museums or attractions, reservations are not required, only recommended. In any case, I recommend that you check on a museum or attraction-by-museum basis what the arrangements are for admission. They may vary during busy periods and require mandatory online advance reservations.
At present, the museums and attractions where reservations are recommended although not mandatory are:
- Mausoleum of Augustus - online booking via romapass.vivaticket.it
- Sistema Musei di Roma Capitale(Musei capitolini, Mercati di Traiano, Museo dell'ara pacis, Centrale Montemartini, Museo di Roma, Galleria d'arte moderna, Museo Roma in Trastevere, Musei di Villa Torlonia, Museo civico di Zoologia, Circo Massimo Area Archeologica) - You can book free of charge online at romapass.vivaticket.it or by calling +39 060608 (daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.).
- Archaeological excavations of Palazzo Valentini Domus Romane - online booking via romapass.ticketone.it (cost €1.50) or free via email by writing to romapass@tosc.it

This is a city pass that you can use directly from your smartphone, without printing or collecting anything upon arrival. However, remember to print the individual tickets you purchased in case you are required to show them at the entrances.
When is the Rome Digital Pass worthwhile?
The Rome Digital Pass is a useful tourist pass for visiting Rome more independently. Basically there are a few attractions that are always included, among the absolute most popular, must-see destinations on a tourist's vacation to Rome. In addition to these you decide what to see, choosing from both entrance fees to museums and attractions, as well as tours and guided visits, applying a 10 percent discount to everything. A flexible solution that allows you to really tailor the pass to your vacation pace and tastes.
Interesting then is the fact that there are no day limits. If you take a long vacation, where the 3-day validity of Roma Pass or Omnia Card Roma would be a bit tight for you, you can make the most of this card.
Another much appreciated aspect is being able to book everything online, through one easy and well-done site or app, Tiqets. You will avoid having to jump from site to site to buy tickets and book visits, keeping everything in one place.
All in all, an interesting formula, successfully proposed in other cities and anexcellent solution for visiting Rome as well.
Where to buy them
The Rome Digital Pass is designed and sold by Tiqets, a reliable online travel agency active in several European cities. Below are links to the official website
Buy the Rome Tourist Card with Colosseum + Vatican Museums Purchase Vatican City PassThe 10% discounts are also valid for purchases made through Tiqets.
Explorer Pass Rome
The Roma Explorer Pass, offered by Go City, is a very interesting formula, already successfully proposed in other cities.
Buy the Explorer Pass RomeThe operation is simple. This Rome pass includes a list of about 25 attractions, including Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine, Capitoline Museums, hop-on hop-off bus, guided tour to St. Peter's Basilica.
When purchasing, you only need to choose the number of attractions you would like to visit from this list (between 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 attractions). Once you arrive in Rome, you can decide which ones, visiting the attractions or participating in the tours, until you reach the total number of the purchased pass.
Transportation is not included, except for a few special options, such as the hop-on hop-off tour bus.
Booking museums and attractions with Explorer Pass Rome
Even in the case of the Rome Explorer Pass there are a number of tours and attractions that you need to book in advance, while for others it is only recommended. For convenience, Go City has collected these particular arrangements on one page, with all the info on which attractions require reservations and how to do so.
It is important to use the links provided to reserve your entry.
It should be noted that virtually all guided tours require reservations. This is because, as you can easily imagine, there are not very many seats available and the guide needs to know how many people will be joining the tour.
Be aware that if you do not show up without having made a reservation cancellation, the tour will still be deducted from the number of attractions in your pass.
Validity
The Go Rome Explorer Pass is valid for 30 days from the first attraction visited.
Rome Explorer Pass Prices
Below are the list prices of the various passes. Consider that the Explorer Pass is practically always discounted on the official website, a few euros on the smaller denominations, with a larger discount on the multi-attraction passes.

- 6 attractions - € 174 / child (5-15 years) € 114
- 7 attractions - € 199 / child (5-15 years) € 124
When is the Explorer Pass worthwhile?
The Explorer Pass is a special formula. If you are already clear about what you want to visit and are not interested in public transportation passes, it is an excellent solution. You can quickly check the affordability; simply calculate the total price of the individual attractions you are interested in and compare the cost of the pass.
Other highlights include the fact that it is valid for 30 days and the presence of many original tours. If you have already been to Rome and are not interested in the main sights, but want to do something more unusual, I recommend this pass.
Indeed, there are special guided tours and tours on the list, such as a cooking class on artisanal ice cream at Grom, a guided tour of the Catacombs, a Tour of Castel Gandolfo Lake by kayak, central seats for the show "The Three Tenors in Concert," and more. Attractions designed more for a foreign audience, which turn out to be an original idea for those who want to experience a different Rome than usual.
